Vacation prep

How to take care of your lawn while you're on vacation.

With all the planning and packing involved, the last thing you need is extra stress over the condition of your lawn. If the weather conditions are favorable, a healthy lawn should typically handle your absence for a week or two.

To ensure your lawn stays healthy during the summer heat, take a few simple steps before and after your trip. Even if the turf goes dormant, you can still help it recover and regain its lush, green look.

lawn care preparation before travel
A short pre-trip lawn routine makes it much easier to come home to a property that still feels under control.
Before you leave town
  1. If you plan to go on a trip, mowing your lawn just before leaving is advisable. During the summer, grass growth slows down, providing flexibility to your lawn care routine. Before embarking on your journey, you can mow it as usual.
  2. Make a watering plan. If you have an irrigation system, keep it running as usual. If the forecast shows little rain, consider adding an extra day of watering each week you're away. If you rely on a hose and sprinkler, soak the lawn for an hour in each area before leaving or ask a reliable neighbor or friend to water the lawn and flowers.
After you return
  1. You might consider mowing your lawn at a slightly higher height than usual. If you've been away for a while, the grass has likely grown quite long. To avoid cutting off more than a third of the blade at once, raise the mowing height and mow more frequently until you reach your preferred length.
  2. Water or don't. If your lawn experienced heavy rainfall, it may be excessively waterlogged and should be allowed to dry out. If it looks extremely dry, water it deeply and continue with your regular watering schedule.
Summer dormancy

Dealing with summer dormancy.

If you plan to be away from home for an extended period, your lawn may go dormant. That is a natural survival mechanism. During dormancy, the foliage turns brown and appears dead, but the roots and crowns remain alive.

Patience is vital. Most healthy lawns can survive dormant for three to four weeks without rainfall or irrigation. Once you return, water the lawn immediately and continue regularly. As temperatures cool, the grass will recover, emerge from dormancy, and grow.

3 to 4 weeks is the common survival window for a healthy dormant lawn without rainfall or irrigation.
Roots stay alive even when the top growth turns brown and the yard looks stressed.
Water on return then keep a regular rhythm in place while temperatures begin to cool.
Healthy lawn fundamentals

Watering strategy

Here are some tips for watering your lawn.

Water your lawn when it needs it. If you take pride in having a beautiful, healthy lawn, you know how important it is to care for it consistently. The challenge is that weather conditions, humidity, and rainfall can be unpredictable, making it hard to know when the lawn needs more attention and when it needs less.

To help you strike the right balance between watering enough and watering too much, VanBeck has some valuable guidance to share.

Early morning is the best time to water and avoid moisture-loving turf disease.
45 to 60 minutes per lawn zone typically creates the deeper soak roots respond to.
Tuna can test is a quick way to see if rainfall already delivered the inch you need.

01 When is the optimal time to water your lawn?

Evenings may feel more convenient, but nighttime watering can leave moisture sitting on the lawn because there is no sunlight to help excess droplets dry up. Water early in the morning to improve penetration and reduce the risk of moisture-loving turf disease.

02 Should you water your lawn after rainfall?

A healthy lawn usually needs only one inch of water each week. Place empty tuna cans around the turf to measure rainfall. If the can is full, the lawn has received enough water and should not need extra irrigation. Rain sensors are another budget-friendly way to track precipitation, conserve water, and reduce unnecessary cost.

03 What is the recommended duration for watering your lawn?

For a healthier root system, water deeply and infrequently. Let a sprinkler system run on a specific zone for about 45 minutes to one hour. That even soak creates a stronger moisture reserve in the soil and helps you wait several days before watering again.

04 What should you use to water your lawn?

Use a lawn sprinkler or a professionally installed irrigation system instead of a handheld garden hose. Better distribution helps prevent puddles, protects the turf surface, and reduces the conditions that can lead to disease.

05 Why do weather conditions and temperature changes matter?

Most lawns need around one to one and a half inches of water each week, but sunlight, heat, wind, and rainfall all affect how quickly that supply is used up. Hot and dry stretches may require more frequent watering, while wet weeks may mean cutting back.

06 What does it mean to be water smart?

Position your sprinkler strategically so it covers as much turf as possible. That wider, more intentional coverage helps reduce waste and keeps water focused where it will actually benefit the lawn.

07 What are the signs of drought?

Watch for changes in color and texture. If the lawn starts looking bluish-gray or footprints leave more noticeable marks, the turf is asking for water. In that situation, water the lawn immediately, regardless of the time of day.
